As if splitting videogames into “hardcore” and “casual” wasn’t stupid enough, Nintendo has decided to throw another idiotic and ill-defined buzzword into the ring — announcing that Mario Kart Wii is now a “bridge game.” Yay for terms that further widen this nonsensical and mythical divide between “hardcore” and “casual” gamers.

Apparently, Mario Kart Wii is a bridge game because it lets “novices and veterans play and have fun together.” I always thought that most videogames could be enjoyed by novices and veterans, but I guess I was wrong. They need these special bridges to connect the dots, otheriwse people new to gaming just won’t have fun! Ah, the heady world of videogame PR talk, where would we be without you? Well, we wouldn’t be here reading moronic terms pulled from the ass of some executive in between lines of cocaine.

Last year when I had a chance to see a demo of Sega’s upcoming Iron Man game, I was told that the voice talent hadn’t been nailed down. This was surprising to hear considering the game is based on an upcoming film; surely the film’s talent would sign on to be part of this momentous event!

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

Those that are hungry for more information about the upcoming Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 super-phone will be pleased to know that the Swedish-Japanese handset maker revealed us more through the recently released white paper. Here's what we know:

  1. Pre-loaded XPERIA panels:
    • Sony Ericsson Panel - news, weather, finance, world clock, and app shortcuts
    • Media Experience Panel - multimedia consumption and navigation
    • Slideshow Panel - slideshow of recent photos and videos
    • Microsoft Today Panel
    • 3D Fish Panel - Aquarium with 3D fishes (is this a screensaver or what)
    • Custom Panels - user customized
  2. Media Sharing - allows media sharing (DLNA compatible) via ActiveSync or WiFi
  3. Video recording options
    • MPEG-4: 30fps @ VGA
    • H.263: 30fps @ VGA (U.S. model only at 24fps)
    • H.264: 15fps @ VGA (not supported on U.S model)
  4. Browser bundled is only Internet Explorer. I guess we'll have to install Opera or some other browser for ourselves.
  5. Location services - Google Maps is pre-installed by default
  6. Email
    • Exchange Direct Push is built-in
    • Set-up Wizards for Gmail, Yahoo, Live Hotmail
    • POP3 configured automatically
  7. Java ME pre-installed
  8. 1700MHz support is notably missing

Some of the new features AT&T customers should expect are ringtones preview, screenshots of games and graphics (before purchasing), as well as customer purchase recommendations. According to the official release:

Like its predecessor, MEdia Mall 2.0 will feature more than 90,000 choices from more than 115 different content providers. MEdia Mall 2.0 shoppers are just a click away from even more content with millions of additional full track songs, available from Napster Mobile and eMusic. From the “Ringtones” page, customers can click on the “Full Track Music” link to shop for music from capable handsets.
