It's not everyday that we see even a modicum of concern from Cupertino regarding public (by which I mean the blogosphere's) view on any Apple product. That said, it's good to see that the newly released iPhone SDK beta could grant applications to run processes in the background - opening the door for true multi-tasking possibilities on the iPhone.
Third-party iPhone application developers have been lamenting Apple's decision to limit applications from running processes in the background, while Apple's own applications (Mail, Safari, iTunes) are allowed to keep running while other applications are being used. The restriction would keep applications like Instant Messaging clients and email clients from functioning properly.
But, things are looking up for the iPhone developer community. An anonymous developer has found that the new iPhone SDK beta seems to allow for processes to run in the background.
There are definitely some very interesting methods added to UIApplication’s delegate, including methods for badging the Springboard icon, and methods related to gaining and resigning “active” status - seems like background apps might be permitted somehow.
If Apple is really changing their game-plan for third-party applications on the iPhone, we have the ability to expect to see some truly practical applications hitting the AppStore in a couple months.
[Update]
Further inspection of the new iPhone SDK reveals that third-party applications mayl be granted to maintain active processes in the background, not actually executing incoming events in the background.

Alleged handset theft happens all the time, it's the reason we should all keep our precious mobile phones guarded at all times. But, that bit of common sense seems to have been too much for the White Home. Apparently, heightened security measures required that White Home staff leave their sensitive-data-filled BlackBerries on an unattended table outside a conference room where the Mexican delegation was meeting with President Bush. The opportunity to make off with a few of these handsets was just too much for Rafael Quintero Curiel, who left the conference early and swiped said BlackBerries.
Rafael Quintero Curiel, lead press attache for the Mexican media delegation, was caught on camera stuffing his pockets with as many BlackBerry handsets as would fit. He promptly headed to the airport before the Secret Service intervened.
Curiel was apprehended and confronted by the Secret Service, upon which the Mexican press attache claimed it was all an accident - he thought the phones were left behind and was merely trying to return them to their rightful owners. Curiel was released on diplomatic immunity and sent on his way south of the border. The Mexican Embassy has issued a statement that Curiel was to tender his resignation upon returning to Mexico City.

Sprint seems to be all about the network service delays recently. With the announcement that Sprint would be pulling back its WiMAX-based XOHM network launch to later this year, it's not all that encouraging to hear that Sprint's PTT (Push-To-Talk) service, dubbed QChat, could be delayed until June 15.
PhoneArena reports that the public release of QChat enabled handsets has been pushed back from April 20 to a June 15 launch window, indicating that the entire QChat service will also be delayed. It's unclear if Sprint has delayed their service due to network technicalities or if they just wanted to give QChat customers more handset options with the launch of their service.
Either way, Sprint had better get to launching their QChat service, what with Verizon breathing down Sprint's neck with a Red-branded PTT service of their own.

LG isn't going to sit idly by as Apple continues to trounce its stylish LG Prada with the upcoming launch of the next-generation 3G iPhone. Having seen sales of the original LG Prada eaten up by the iPhone, LG has apparently gotten back into the mix with a successor to the LG Prada couture handset.
The LG Prada II, as it's so creatively called, is purportedly slated for launch in 4Q 2008. Packed with a quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM radio, dual-band (900/2100Mhz) WCDMA with 7.2Mbps HSDPA speeds, 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen display, 5 megapixel camera (with front-facing video-call camera), WiFi (b/g), Bluetooth, TV-out, FM radio, and microSD card slot, the LG Prada II is sure to please. And, updating the original LG Prada's touchscreen-only design, LG has decided to fit the LG Prada II with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
Now that's a spec sheet that we can really get behind! With the 3G iPhone slated to launch ahead of the LG Prada II, it should be interesting to see how the new haute-handset from LG will fare.
Note: the pic isn’t the Prada II, just a render.

It looks like the price cut that O2 UK implemented on the 8GB iPhone variant in the UK boosted sales beyond even Apple's expectations. Reports were trickling in that stores across the country were running low or completely out of stock on 8GB iPhones. Now, we're hearing reports that all retail channels in the UK are sold out of iPhone 8GB stock, with no plans for any re-stocking shipments. Carphone Warehouse's website indicates that the iPhone 8GB is “out of stock,” while O2's website shows the handset as “no longer available.”
O2 has even issued an internal memo letting its retail staff know that they “will not be replenishing stock of this product as it has now gone to end of life.
Apple has apparently given the iPhone 8GB an end-of-life kiss, effectively discontinuing the handset in the UK. Just as the lower price point started to boost sales of the 8GB iPhone, Apple has up and stopped shipping new stock.
The discontinued iPhone 8GB could indicate that the 3G iPhone launch could happen sooner than the expected June 9 launch window. We'll have to wait and see.
To all you UK iPhone hopefuls: ideal of luck trying to find an iPhone 8GB.

UK Operator Orange has reported strong growth in content consumption, with some stats to back it up too….
Apparently Orange World (the Orange portal) now has 2.64mil monthly users, which is up 12% from the last quarter. Each user is also looking looking at more pages (termed “impressions”), which is up by 33%.
In terms of downloads, it's Games are proving extremely popular, with nearly 800k games downloaded over three months. Music was running at 250k tracks per month during the same time period.
Whilst the numbers viewing Mobile Television were not released, stats about their behaviour were, including the fact subscribers are now spending 87% longer viewing. Out of the channels available, Sky Sports, and BBC One were tops.
And last but not least, there were just under 1mil downloads of video during the measured period.
Overall, these are encouraging stats - particularly the growth on the portal side, which has traditionally been an achilles heel for Operators, in terms of page impressions, and indeed traffic. Over all, a pat on the back due for Orange, I think!

AAC Acoustic Technologies Holdings (not to be confused with the AAC that is Advanced Audio Codec) has announced that it expects Nokia to overtake Motorola as it's largest customer this year:
“Revenue from Nokia would account for more than 25 per cent of AAC's total sales this year….compared with 10 per cent last year, while revenue earned from sales to Motorola is set to decrease to about 25 per cent of total sales this year from 37 per cent last year.”
At the same time it was also announced that sales to RIM, Palm, and Apple would also be sizeable -together they are expected to increase their share of AAC's total sales to a combined 15 per cent from 5 per cent last year.

AAC Acoustic Technologies develop and manufacture a complete range of Cellular Phone Receivers, Hearing Aid Receivers, Miniature Speakers, Miniature Multi-function Speakers, Headsets, Microphones and Transducers & Buzzers - and obviously pretty well, judging by the news above!!

Motorola is in the process of investing in a company called VirtualLogix - their tech makes it possible for handset makers to use virtualization to run two OSes on a single phone - not unlike the virtual machines that we know and love in the Personal computer world…
Apparently the idea is not actually to run two OSes, but more around security:
“Using virtualization, a handset maker can run one operating system that controls important basic phone functions, and separate it from another operating system that an end-user can customize and add applications to. Separating the two protects the basic phone functions from being corrupted by applications that a user may download.”
Sounds like somewhat of a cunning plan, especially now we’re firmly in the era of the Smartphone…
At the moment VirtualLogix products are being used in another way - to reduce phone development costs:
“NXP Semiconductor, for example, is able to use one processor to run the wireless stack as well as the mobile Linux operating system, something that would normally require a separate application processor….It enables a phone to be built at a price under [US]$100 with full multimedia capabilities…”
Personally, I think this is another interesting take on getting things done in Mobile devices - an innvoative architecture, which could deliver some customisable, yet secure devices. And that’s no bad thing.
