Palm SkywriterWith the Palm Treo 800w getting prepped to be released as the latest Windows Mobile 6.1-powered device from flagging handset manufacturer Palm, there's not much else that Palm Treo fans are looking forward to. But, that might all change with this latest report from TamsPPC that Palm has opened up Windows Mobile development access to promotional materials for the Palm Zeppelin and Palm Skywriter.

The codename “Zeppelin” is the internal codename for the Palm Treo 800w, so there's nothing new there. But, the appearance of the Palm “Skywriter” is definitely a new development. The image you see above is likely a mock-up (at least we hope it is…can you state ugly?) of the Palm Skywriter. What we're hearing is that the Palm Skywriter will be a Palm Centro-like Windows Mobile device, so the consumer market is likely the target demographic.

Other speculation points to the Palm Skywriter being the same device as the mysterious GPS, WiFi and HSDPA-toting Palm Drucker that's slated for the same launch window as the Palm Skywriter - July 2008. Note that the Palm Treo 800w is also expected to go live on July 22. WMExperts poses the possibility that the Palm Treo 800w could launch in both GSM and CDMA, which would concur with two separate codenames.

Pope Benedict XVI to use SMS text message to communicate to youthIn a sign of the times that we live in, Pope Benedict XVI will reportedly be sending out thousands of SMS text messages to the youth that’ll be attending the 6-day World Youth Day (WYD) event that kicks off on July 15 in Sydney, Australia.

The text messages will be used to send inspirational messages to the youngsters attending the WYD event. Telstra will be providing the infrastructure for the Catholic Church's tech-embracing push to reach the religious masses.

“We wanted to make WYD08 a unique experience by using new ways to connect with today’s tech-savvy youth,” says Bishop Anthony Fisher.

Seemingly renewed by its escape from takeover, Yahoo is hitting the Windows Mobile platform with gusto. With the release of the new Yahoo! Go 3.0 beta for Windows Mobile handsets, Yahoo has improved their mobile application's UI and Yahoo oneSearch feature. The new Yahoo! Go 3.0 supports full widget support (like Wikipedia, MySpace and eBay) and offers an integrated at-a-glance Yahoo screen.

Yahoo! Go 3.0 beta available on Windows Mobile

As with most things mobile these days, the Yahoo! Go 3.0 holds your data in the “cloud” so that you can retrieve your info from any device that can access the web. But, that means you'll be seeing a fair amount of data access on your Windows Mobile device. So, an unlimited data plan might be a good idea before you begin going crazy with the new, prettier Yahoo! Go 3.0 app.

For what it's worth. The application works quite well on my Samsung SGH-i617 BlackJack II (BJ2/BJII), and the HSDPA data connection make for some truly speedy and smooth data access and retrieval. I haven't yet tried the new app on my Motorola Q9h, but I'd imagine that it works just as well.

RIM BlackBerry 8330 Curve now available on Verizon WirelessWait, since when does Verizon Wireless actually release a new handset ahead of schedule? Perhaps the No. 2 wireless carrier in the US realized that Verizon customers already have to wait long enough for the hot new handsets to filter down to the CDMA ecosystem - they might as well launch the BlackBerry Curve 8330 ahead of its previously scheduled May 9 release. The BlackBerry 9000 might be taking more than its fair share of the limelight in BlackBerry circles recently, but the release of the BlackBerry Curve on Verizon Wireless is definitely worth considering.

Verizon Wireless is offering the RIM BlackBerry 8330 Curve with its 2 megapixel camera, QWERTY keyboard, EVDO data connection, GPS receiver, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, and microSD card slot for about $170 (after 2-year contract and rebates). Of course, the usual compliment of Verizon-branded services like VCAST Television and VZ Navigator will be made available on the Silver-colored BlackBerry 8330 Curve.

If you've been waiting to get your push-email fix with the Verizon Wireless BlackBerry Curve 8330, head on over to Massive Red's website and get that sweet, sweet BlackBerry love.

Telecom italia Mobile TIM offering unlocked iPHoneItaly's going to have some competitive iPhone sales later this year. With Vodafone already on-board to bring the 3G iPhone to Italy as part of a 10-country iPhone launch, the juggernaut wireless provider is an iPhone-force to be reckoned with. But, that's not going to cease smaller Italian carrier Telecom Italia Movil (TIM) from giving it their best shot with an Italian iPhone offering of their very own.

TIM has announced that it “has signed a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Italy later this year.”  There's no mention of whether TIM's Apple iPhone will be the current-generation iPhone or the next-generation iPhone capable of 3G network data speeds. Previous speculation has hinted at TIM launching the 3G iPhone without contract or network-lock. We can't wait to see if Apple will indeed let TIM launch an unlocked 3G iPhone alongside Vodafone's offering…

Nokia E71 gets picturedFollowing up on those rather low-quality spy shots of the upcoming Nokia business phones - the Nokia E66 and E71 - it looks like Espoo's let their newest cats out of their bags. The Nokia E66 and Nokia E71 are set to take Nokia's enterprise handset portfolio to new levels.

As expected, both business-oriented handsets rock 3.2 megapixel shooters and 128MB of memory. Thankfully, that chromed-out bezel that we saw in previous Nokia E66 and Nokia E71 pics has been muted with a more business-friendly black finish. Word has it that the slide mechanism on the Nokia E66 has a solid feel - indicating that Nokia took what it learned from the Nokia N95's slide mechanism complaints and applied it to the Nokia E66 (not to mention the Nokia N96).

Now, we just wait for Nokia to get official with the Nokia E66 and Nokia E71. Hopefully, the wait won't be too long.

Samsung Instinct on SprintHow do we know that Sprint is pushing the Samsung Instinct to go toe-to-toe with AT&T's Apple iPhone? Well, aside from the obvious touchscreen and form-factor similarities, an email from Sprint recommends, “Move over iPhone, The Instinct by Samsung is coming.”

Sprint's going all out in marketing their iPhone-fighting all-touchscreen device and has launched a new website dedicated to giving loyal Sprint customers a first look at the Samsung Instinct and its grocery-list of features. Confirming what we already knew, Sprint's website indicates that the Samsung Instinct will be launched in June.

Qwest signs with Verizon WirelessIt looks like Sprint just didn't have what Qwest wireless wanted from an MVNO network lease partner. Making good on previous speculation that Qwest was preparing to drop Sprint and sign up with Verizon Wireless, Qwest has announced that, come this summer, Large Red will be providing wireless airtime to Qwest's wireless subscribers. The move marks Qwest's adoption of a new business model. Gone are the days of Qwest's red-ink-stained MVNO balance sheet - Qwest will now offer all of Verizon Wireless's cellphones and services through Qwest's call centers, retails channels, and website.

The new deal with VZW is stated to be “much, much better” than the previous MVNO deal with Sprint. Qwest's MVNO operation with Sprint limited the small carrier to offering wireless service only to customers that were within the 14-state area where it offers its landline phone service. In this new deal with Verizon, Qwest will be able to offer wireless service, through Verizon Wireless, to customers in all 50 says.

Qwest will essentially become a third-party Verizon Wireless dealer with special privileges. All customers that buy wireless service through one of Qwest's bundled service packages will be billed through Qwest. Any customers signing up for wireless service by itself will see their bill coming directly from Verizon Wireless.

Qwest is eager to kick off its 5-year deal with Verizon Wireless, especially with the prospect of giving its customers access to Verizon Wireless's stable of mobile phones and next-generation broadband data network (LTE, when it launches).

Things aren't getting any better for Sprint. At least they've cemented their XOHM plans, which will hopefully save the company from a spiral into oblivion.
