If you ask us, we're done listening to Palm just speaking about their Palm OS 2.0. We want to see the Linux-based revamp to the so-old-it's-senile Palm OS before Palm's mobile platform fades from our radar.
In an effort to keep us all interested in Palm's overhauled mobile OS, the company's CEO, Ed Colligan, talked up what he calls “Palm 2.0.” The new mobile platform is codenamed “Nova,” and will be built on Linux, but Colligan refrained from referring to it as Palm OS 2.0. “I’m not coming up with the branding right now – whether it’s Palm OS 2.0 or Next Generation, we’re not coming up with the branding right now.” Who cares what you call it, just get it out in the open already.
Palm is apparently concentrating on endowing their new Palm OS “next-generation operating system with much more capabilities, driven around the Internet and Web-based applications.” Palm wants to launch their own OS because they want another stab at developing an integrated OS solution that we saw with the Palm OS's initial release.
But, that's not all. Colligan believes that their failed Foleo platform will be “vindicated someday,” hinting that the Foleo could be more in hibernation than six feet underground.
Now, the prospect of a fully integrated mobile platform that focuses on web-based application and web surfing really has our hopes up for the new Palm OS, Pam 2.0, next-generation, whatever it's going to be called. Come on Palm, launch it before it's too late. Palm Treo 900 powered by Nova? Bring it on.

Samsung's new push to take the Soul lineup to new heights has seen a few handsets with varied form-factors proudly sporting the Samsung “Soul” branding. The newest Samsung monoblock (candybar) mobile phone to be inducted into the “Soul” lineup is the Samsung SGH-U800. Samsung has branded the U800 as the Samsung Soulb.
With quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM, UMTS, 3.2 megapixel camera, FM radio with RDS, 1GB internal memory, microSD card slot, and Bluetooth 2.0 packed in to an amazingly thin 9.8mm thin package, the Samsung U800 Soulb is definitely worthy of the “Soul” branding that was befitting the first Samsung Soul.
Confused as to how to pronounce the new Samsung Soulb's moniker? So are we. “Soulbee?” Perhaps.

Look for the Samsung U800 Soulb to launch in your choice of Soul Grey, Platinum Silver, Metallic Black, Soul Pink and Amethyst Violet for an as yet unknown price. Germany gets first pick in early June, and countries in Europe, Asia, Middle East, and South America will follow after that. Those of us in the US are out of luck…again.

A few grains of salt would be prudent in this case, but with the 3G iPhone launch imminent, any and all iPhone-related rumors are at least worth considering. Especially when such speculation hints that Apple might have to delay the launch of the high-anticipated next-generation iPhone.
According to UBS Investment Research analyst Nicolas Gaudois, Infineon has issued a profit warning tied to the chip-maker having “received lower orders than expected” for 3G/HSDPA baseband chips for a certain “high-speed World wide web phone.” Infineon didn't go so far as to state that the 3G chips were destined for the 3G iPhone, but the consensus is that the next-generation iPhone will be powered by 3G chips from Infineon.
Furthermore, Gaudois has tied the lower than expected hardware orders to delays in Apple's 3G iPhone ramp. “In our view the profit warning has been caused by ramp changes of next generation iPhone, into which Infineon is supplying the main High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) chipset,” stated Gaudois.
Apple's supply chain prowess was highlighted with their flawless launch-logistics in the initial iPhone launch, so it would be a shame if Apple dropped the ball in ramping-up production for the next-generation iPhone. It would be more unfortunate if these ramp delays led to launch delays of the 3G iPhone.

In yet another rumor pointing towards some sort of subsidization or discount pricing schedule for Apple's next-generation iPhone, Orange is stated to be offering upgrade deals and discounts for current iPhone customers.
According to French-language PCInpact, France-based Orange has contacted customers regarding a possible upgrade deal for the iPhone. In on possible deal, Orange would allow current iPhone customers to trade-in their iPhones for a new, 3G iPhone. The swap would subsidize the buy of the next-gen iPhone with just a €50 difference left for the customer to pay.
Another possibility would have Orange giving current iPhone users a “generous discount” when buying the 3G iPhone.
If true, we could see the next-generation iPhone offered through at least one carrier at subsidized price-points - perhaps departing from the revenue-sharing model required by Apple for the current iPhone.
Why oh why can't June 9 come any faster?

We're not sure what this thing is called, but it's nice to see another 5-megapixel shooter from Motorola complementing the legendary Motorola ZINE ZN5 5-megapixel Kodak cameraphone. The Motorola ZINE ZN5 has been spotted rocking a 5-megapixel shooter from Kodak, in candy-bar (monoblock) form. The MotoZINE ZN5 is supposed to be the cameraphone monster that brings Motorola out of their unfortunate slump.
But, these newest in-the-wild photos of a similarly equipped 5-megapixel cameraphone from Motorola has us scratching our heads. Boy Genius got his hands on this high-quality cameraphone toting a Kodak-branded camera, but it's apparently a slider, not the candybar that we've been expecting. Does Motorola have another multi-megapixel monster planned for fans of the slider form-factor? Another MotoZINE or PERLX?
We're not sure what this thing is, but given its feature-set, we're not all that excited to see this handset hit market. Much like the MotoZINE ZN5's lack of 3G data connectivity, this new 5 megapixel Kodak cameraphone will be limited to WiFi and EDGE for all its data needs. Even worse, there's no auto-focus on that badass shooter.
Motorola would have done well to get their MOTOMAGX Linux platform to play nice with 3G data speeds and chipsets, but it seems that the ailing company couldn't be bothered to put their all in to a device that could help boost the company's bottom line.
No autofocus on what could have been an extraordinary 5-megapixel cameraphone. No 3G on a device that's supposed to compete with the latest and greatest from the world's top handset manufacturers. Fairly bland exterior styling.
Could Motorola have dropped the ball any lower? Well, there's still time for Moto to fix their Kodak cameraphones before they launch…

The sleeker and arguably superior looking successor to the Nokia N95 has been eagerly awaited since it was officially announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year. With WiFi, DVB-H mobile Television, GPS, and 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash under the hood, the Nokia N96 and it's glossy black finish is nearly guaranteed to be a hit for Espoo.
And, with anecdotal evidence assuring us that the new backlit keypad and bar-shaped keys will be just as easy (possibly easier) as the Nokia N95's keyad, there's really nothing standing in the way of the Nokia N96's success.
That being said, online retailer Play.com has listed a Nokia N96 for pre-order. Awesome, right? Well, only if you can muster the $1,200 asking price. Keep in mind that Nokia's estimated retail price on the handset is just (relatively talking, of course) $800.
The launch-date diviners at Play.com are expecting Nokia to go live with the Nokia N96 on July 31. We’ve no reason to believe or doubt this seemingly arbitrary launch date, so we'll run with it until we hear otherwise.

While many await the US launch of a handful of smartphones from the likes of HTC, Sony Ericsson, Apple, and Nokia, some of you might be looking forward to RIM's first flip-phone - the RIM KickStart. Spy photos of the RIM KickStart in Black (peep the image to your right) surfaced just the day before, so it's good to see KickStart rumors keeping pace with demand. The latest details on RIM's BlackBerry KickStart come from RIM's “Flip Experience” slide show.
There aren't any real juicy details in the slideshow, aside from the mundane walk-through on how to use the RIM KickStart to make voice calls, send SMS text messages, check alerts, and play music. On the upside, we get a glimpse of the RIM KickStart in action.
Word on the street is that the RIM KickStart will ship with BlackBerry OS 5.0. Sweet!

The KickStart is looking more and more attractive everyday. Anyone planning to get the RIM's first flip-phone BlackBerry when it launches?

ReCellular recently announced a new mobile phone recycling campaign with the goal to raise a minimum of $50,000 for the American Red Cross.
Apparently two in three Americans will replace their mobile phones with a newer model this year, and the vast majority of them will either keep their old phones in a junk drawer, or will add them to local landfills. ReCellular, on the other hand, wants to safely recycle these phones, while providing financial support for the Red Cross at the same time.
The program will include mobile phone donations from Red Cross supporters. Those who would like to participate can download a prepaid shipping label from the Red Cross Web site. For each cell phone collected and sold until October 31, 2008, ReCellular will donate $1 to the American Red Cross, with a minimum commitment of $50,000.
Commenting on the announcement, American Red Cross's VP of Development Operations Lauri Rhinehart said: “We think this is a great way for people to support the mission of the Red Cross and protect the environment. We’re thrilled to be the beneficiary of ReCellular's campaign which reaches out to the consumer market to turn old phones into donations.”
If you’ve an old phone you want to throw away, check out on Red Cross' website for more information.
