By now it’s evident that there is a good sampling of the iPhone 3G fleet that’s experiencing 3G-network woes. From slow data connections to signal-strength flakiness, the iPhone 3G isn’t performing as promised for those affected by the 3G reception issues.
The problem has gotten so bad that Apple released their iPhone 2.0.2 OS shortly after releasing the iPhone 2.0.1 OS in an attempt to repair some of the iPhone 3G’s connectivity bugs. But, in their haste to release another iPhone OS update to repair bugs, Apple’s latest iPhone 2.0.2 OS has reportedly started causing more problematic network issues - most prominently, the inability to make voice calls on the 3G network.
So, in that vein, an Alabama woman has filed a lawsuit against Apple, saying that her “Defective iPhone 3G” has failed to deliver on Apple’s performance and reliability claims. In addition to slower-than-expected data speeds, the plaintiff, Jessica Alena Smith, says that she is only able to connect to the AT&T 3G network about a quarter of the time and has experienced an “inordinate amount of dropped calls.” The lack of 3G connectivity is puzzling given her Birmingham, Alabama hometown’s extensive 3G coverage.
Smith is pushing to have the lawsuit approved as a class-action lawsuit, claiming that the potential class could include tens of thousands of plaintiffs. The lawsuit seeks to have Apple replace or repair all defective iPhone 3G handsets and that Apple pay unspecified damages and attorney’s fees.
With the iPhone 3G continuing to have problems for some (although, to be fair, none of IntoMobile’s iPhone 3G handsets are exhibiting problems), and Apple failing to repair the problem with the iPhone 2.0.2 OS update, we could see this latest lawsuit get class-action approval. And, if Apple doesn’t find a solution right quick, they might be in for a one helluva legal ride.

It doesn’t come as a surprise to see Google trying to monetize YouTube’s mobile offering. Lately, the search giant has started running a test of display ads on choose pages of the YouTube mobile site in the U.S. and Japan.
According to Google, it’s a first step in testing mobile advertising for YouTube, designed to give users a “new way to interact with content on the go,” while allowing them [YouTube] to learn how video viewers engage with mobile ads.
Yeah, I do have problems with the wording, though, but I can understand someone needs to pay for all that bandwidth…
Anyway, lucky test advertisers will be provided with an additional branding tool and the opportunity to reach/annoy the millions of people who visit YouTube each day on their phones.

Even though we still wait to see Motorola releasing the S9-HD Bluetooth headset, that doesn’t stop the struggling American handset maker to paint it in a new color. Just yesterday, we’ve caught an image of the upcoming headphones in white with blue accents — as opposed to the original black model. As far as we can tell, the specs remain unchanged and the only difference is in the color.
Now that I’m thinking, I even like the original MOTO S9 model and honestly can’t wait to give the S9-HD a try. Black or white, it doesn’t matter as far as I’m concerned. Hopefully, MOTO will start selling these sooner rather than later…

Today we’re seeing what’s reported to be the first ever screenshots of the iPhone Nike+ application. The signal receiver that communicates with the in-shoe sensor is already compatible with the iPhone’s dock connector, but users are going to need an iPhone application to take advantage of the hardware.
The new iPhone Nike+ app is expected to allow you to update your on the web running log/run-tracker in real-time. There’s even a mapping feature shown in the screenshots that has us excited to go explore our neighborhood.
Now, where did I put that Nike+ run sensor?

Well that sure was swift. It seems like just an eye-blink ago that Apple released their iPhone 2.0.1 OS for iPhone and iPhone 3G owners looking to get enhanced performance out of their sometimes laggy iPhones. And, following on the iPhone Dev Team’s release of the iPhone 2.0.1 OS-jailbreaking solution, Pwnage Tool 2.0.2, Cupertino has released their latest iPhone OS.
iPhone OS 2.0.2 isn’t yet officially supported by PwnageTool 2.0.2, so if you want to preserve your jailbreak you’ll want to wait for the DevTeam to announce iPhone 2.0.2 OS compatibility for PwnageTool. The new iPhone 2.0.2 OS presumably comes bundled with that new baseband firmware that the DevTeam warned could potential kill any future iPhone 3G SIM-unlock solutions, so updating your iPhone 3G without first “pwning” the firmware file could leave you without an unlockable handset (when, and if, the DevTeam releases an iPhone 3G unlocking solution).

Apple vaguely lists “Bug Fixes” in the iPhone 2.0.2 OS changelog, which doesn’t help pin down the iPhone 2.0.2 OS’s improvements over iPhone 2.0.1 OS. But, some users are reporting that web browsing has been improved, typing lag reduced, and transition from music list to CoverFlow has been updated.
We’ve previously speculated that a new iPhone OS update could bring with it a solution to fix iPhones with shifty 3G signal reception, but it’s not yet clear if the iPhone 2.0.2 OS fixes these reception woes. If you update your iPhone 3G and find that your signal reception has taken a turn for the better, please drop us a line and let us know.
Grab the iPhone 2.0.2 OS through iTunes (after connecting your iPhone, that is).

Pwnage Tool is an extraordinary testament to the iPhone hacking community’s (namely, the Dev Team) capability to crack Cupertino’s code for the betterment of iPhone users worldwide. Unfortunately, the Pwnage Tool jailbreak solution that creates custom iPhone OS packages (ipsw files) requires that you perform a full “Restore” on your iPhone before getting access to your iPhone and iPhone 3G’s file system. In that regard, the Pwnage Tool is a bit of a hassle.
It’s not really that huge a hassle, but the DevTeam apparently realized the iPhone community’s desire for the simplest, safest jailbreak solution and announced their lightweight jailbreak solution - QuickPwn. The new QuickPwn utility is available in developmental form to anyone looking to bring the DevTeam’s work to market, and will allow iPhone users to jailbreak their handset without having to perform a full “Restore.”
So, if you’ve been holding off on jailbreaking that iPhone or iPhone 3G of yours because you just didn’t want to go through the hassle of backing up and restoring your Apple handset, sit tight, the DevTeam is working on a simpler solution!

Now this is just the kind of convergence we’ve been waiting for! The solar-powered necktie might not exactly be the idea in mobile convergence, but with photo-voltaic cells woven in to the necktie’s fabric and a pouch to hold your mobile phone, the solar-powered necktie is the epitome of “geek-chic.” Or maybe just “geek.”
The sun-loving necktie is the brainchild of researchers at North Carolina State University. The researchers apparently made a breakthrough that grants them to make use of “digital textile printing” to invisibly integrate solar-cells in to everyday fabrics. A solar-powered jacket was also crafted, but we’ve all seen that particular song and dance before.
The Solar-Tie is definitely a step in the right direction. Clothing that cradles your mobile phone while charging it? Yes, please.
One day we’ll all be wearing solar-powered fabrics. Or at least the geekier among us will be.
