Sri Lanka’s government has some weird ideas. Back in February, we saw them blocking SMS on independence day and now they want to ban mobile phone lending. The idea behind the move is to fight terrorism, “to avert irregularities and illegal activities while minimizing threats to national security created by the irresponsible use of telephones.”
The proposal, which came from the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRC), would also require people to carry a certificate of ownership at all times. In addition, mobile phone retailers will have to obtain a trading license and secure the legitimate source of all handsets they offer for sale.
Existing subscribers would be told about the new guidelines with their next monthly bill and the system would be effective the following month. Fixed wireless CDMA handsets will also be affected by the law and people will be limited to use them at their registered address, only.
As far as I see it, the new law limits freedom, it’s weird, and I’m completely against it, though, I’m not fully aware about Sri Lanka’s local conditions. I’m sure there are some other, not that intrusive ways to fight terrorism… Any thoughts?

We do know HTC has a CDMA version of its HTC Touch Diamond smartphone ready (it’s been approved by the FCC, after all), and we know it will push it through both Verizon and Sprint. Now, we have a new tidbit of information suggesting Sprint may pick the stylish smartphone later in the month, and start offering it alongside its other popular all-touchscreen device - Samsung Instinct.
According to a current writeup in The China Post, HTC will start selling the Diamond “through Sprint Nextel Corp. in August.” Sprint spent millions to promote the Instinct, and now I’m wondering how they’re going to differentiate it from, honestly, way more powerful Diamond. To be fair, unlike the Instinct, the Diamond is a smartphone hence they may push the device as a more expandable solution for those people that like third-party apps and full Microsoft Exchange support…
In the meantime, some rumors indicate that the Samsung i900 Omnia is heading to AT&T, which is also known as the U.S. iPhone carrier. Interesting times are ahead of us. Consumers will have tons of choice when it comes to all-touchscreen devices. Prices should go down, and that’s a good thing. We’re watching closely…

Canada’s Bell Mobility will be adding new color options to its existing BlackBerry smartphone offering.
As far as we know, the BlackBerry Pearl will be hitting the Canadian carrier in White and Titanium, and BlackBerry Curve 8330 (the one with 3G support) in red. I guess it’s a great news for style aware users who may want to pair their mobile phone with their clothing. Otherwise, I would suggest waiting for the Bold release, which brings much more to the table.
Expected release date is around August 8th. If we hear anything official from Bell Mobility, we’ll certainly get back to you. Stay tuned in the meantime…

T-Mobile USA has announced a new service called Family Allowances, to grant parents to easily manage when and how their family members use their phones and service on T-Mobile’s network.
From the official release:
With Family Allowances, parents can give their teens an upfront monthly wireless allowance that works on all the phones T-Mobile offers - virtually eliminating the worry of surprise overages. The feature lets parents set and change limits for minutes, messages and downloads (e.g., games, ring tones and wallpaper) using a simple on the web tool. Once the allowance is reached, the feature shuts off service for that specific element and parents receive a notification. Parents can stay in contact with their family members by setting up “Always Allowed” numbers that will continue to connect, even after allowances have been spent. Any unlimited calling features that are included in a family’s plan, such as myFaves and T-Mobile-to-T-Mobile, can also still be used, which preserves the value of the calling plan. Additional controls are available so parents can select to set allowances on unlimited calling features, if desired.
Family Allowances will be available in the coming weeks at select T-Mobile retail stores and through mobile operator’s website. For the introductory rate of $2 per month, parents can manage all lines within their T-Mobile family plan.

Lucky folks of PhoneArena had their lucky hands on the latest Sony Ericsson Walkman phones - the W302, W595 and W902. Devices they scored are prototype units, but they drew some conclusions, nonetheless.
Here’s what they think about each on of the devices:
- W302 - “a very cute budget solution from the Walkman series, mainly offering a very attractive design.”
- W595 - “…the key feature which will help it repeat W580’s success is the attractive design.”
- W902 - “…thanks to the promising 5-megapixel camera, it could become a rival of the new mid-level cameraphones, and thus transforming in a good multimedia device.”
