Doctors are warning patients about the dangers of strain and fracture from the use of the Wii gaming console. A group of researchers at Leeds Teaching Hospital have even coined a new term to refer to one such malady: “Wii knee.”

Unsurprisingly, those who are not accustomed to regular exercise are the ones most at risk of Wii-related injury. Medical experts are anticipating an increase in these conditions to occur as a result of the holiday season, as the elderly and overweight attempt to play games with their kids.

I wanted to say that I anticipate these injuries to tail off around New Year’s, as the same people who were hurting themselves before become bored with the device. But the longevity of the Wii craze, something I expected to have faded out long ago, manages to keep chugging along in the face of all reason.

So, if you’re going to be playing Wii with your family this holiday, make sure your loved ones do it in moderation. God forbid they have to explain to their doctor that they hurt themselves playing a videogame.
