So what’s Activision’s idea of a “greatest hit”? IGN has the first bits of the track listing from one of the publisher’s seventeen Guitar Hero games for 2009, Guitar Hero Greatest Hits.

The following eight tracks out of the 48 songs (all masters, ripped from Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero Encore: Rock’s the 80s, and Guitar Hero III) have been confirmed:

  • “Barracuda” by Heart
  • “I Love Rock N Roll” by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
  • “I Wanna Rock” by Twisted Sister
  • “Killer Queen” by Queen
  • “Killing in the Name” by Rage Against The Machine
  • “Nothin’ But A Good Time” by Poison
  • “Them Bones” by Alice in Chains
  • “Through the Fire and Flames” by Dragonforce

The tracks have been adapted for the four instrument set up, including the Expert+ drum mode that debuts in this month’s Guitar Hero: Metallica. The game will also feature new “around the world” venues, including “The Amazon Rain Forest,” “The Polar Ice Caps,” and “The Grand Canyon.”

And that’s the good news. Other news after the jump.

Now on to the bad (bordering on idiotic) news: while the game will feature support for GH Tunes (including the ability to download user-created tracks), you won’t be able to use any of your existing Guitar Hero World Tour downloadable content with Greatest Hits. Furthermore, there will be no way to transfer the Greatest Hits songs for play in World Tour (a la the Rock Band 1 to Rock Band 2 transition).

Guitar Hero Greatest Hits is scheduled for a June release; it has an MSRP of $59.99 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and $49.99 and $39.99 for Wii and PlayStation 2 respectively. Yup.

[Thanks, Power Glove!]
