Name change alert: Glacier2 changes to Glacier 2: Hell on Ice screenshot

In January, we introduced you to Team6 Game Studios’s Glacier2 — an arcade racing title for the Wii. Since then, the game has received a new name. Gone are the days of ramming numbers next to letters. The game’s new name is Glacier 2: Hell on Ice. It’s tacky, but loads superior than what we previously had to write.

Like the Halo: Recon switch, it doesn’t appear that the game’s innards have changed. It’s still a Burnout-ish title, with a setting confined to frigid “mountains of death” (or the Alps, if you want to be politically correct). It will have players utilizing a variety of vehicle-mounted weaponry (rockets, machine guns, and even sniper rifles) in order to reach first place in a variety of races. We have a couple of screens of the game, so check those out if you’re interested.

The game is hitting retail in September.

Hudson's Karaoke JOYSOUND Wii looks like some weird sex toy screenshot

I love the Wii’s endless selection of ridiculous and useless peripherals. If you bought them all, your living room would look like a garage sale. However, I’ve to admit that I love the really ludicrous ones and find myself kind of attracted to them. Envision, then, my reaction to Hudson’s latest solution for not disturbing your neighbors with the swan sounds of your karaoke performance — the JOYSOUND Wii microphone.

The mic comes packaged with the game JOYSOUND Wii and is technically named “Loud Karaoke OK!” It connects to the Wii via USB and has a removable cup that you can wash (thankfully, because it would get gross in there otherwise). Retailing for 3,480 yen, it may seem pretty silly, but since karaoke is so popular in Japan it’s quite possible this device would come in handy for not disturbing your neighbors while having late night celebrations (or if you just want to wail “Total Eclipse of the Heart” at the top of your lungs at 3 am).

Rumortoid: Nintendo working on a Wii movie service screenshot

While Sony and Microsoft have motion picture capabilities in their latest console, Nintendo’s Wii is left without. But Curt Marvis, President of Digital Media for Lionsgate, feels like that could change soon.

Marvis tells Variety that he thinks that Nintendo is working on a movie service.

Miyamoto claims the GameCube made him 'sad' screenshot

If there’s one thing I sense from Nintendo this generation, it’s that they love to sit back and preen themselves, pretending the Wii wasn’t an accidental success story, that they planned it all along, and now they’re superior than everyone else in the world. Don’t get me wrong, Nintendo’s marketing since the Wii caught on has been breathtaking, but statements like Miyamoto’s latest just drip in self-satisfied smugness.

The more we competed with new companies entering the market, the more we started acting similar to them,” claims Miyamoto, probably wanking himself off and sighing with utter self-love as he spoke. “But is being number one in that competition the same as being number one with the general public? That’s the question we’d.

“Entertainment is something that you’ve to look at the world with a very wide eye as you create it. I always thought that, but there were a few years where I was unable to get off other people’s trends. It was a dilemma in my mind.”

Miyamoto claims he’s been miserable since the N64 era, which I personally think is complete bollocks and yet another slap in the face to long-time Nintendo fans. Pretending that you never wanted to appeal to the gamers that kept you afloat during the bad years is a lovely attitude, right?

I don’t care that Nintendo is chasing a new type of consumer now, they’re a business and this is where the profit lies. However, this ludicrous “we’re superior than you people and we exist on a higher plane now” attitude is pretty effing disgusting. Crap like Wii Play and Wii Music might sell a lot of duplicates to idiots, but let’s not pretend we’re serving some higher purpose by creating that toss.

Praying mantis gets sandwich power up in this Excitebots trailer screenshot

It doesn’t matter how many times you’ll read the title of this story, the words I’m using simply don’t belong together. It’s only after you watch the trailer for Excitebots: Trick Racing that it will all become clear, and even then it’s a bit baffling.

The Monster Games developed Wii-exclusive looks like it’s taking a light and loose approach to the Excite Truck and Exciebike franchise, throwing in crazy power-ups, automobiles that look like animals, and wild tricks. Does it look fun? Sort of. But I’m still stuck on the praying mantis automobile getting the “super sandwich” power-up to see much of anything else.

New Muramasa trailer? We have it ... well, we're stealing it! screenshot

A new trailer for upcoming Wii sidescroller Muramasa: The Demon Blade found its way onto YouTube yesterday and, naturally, we’re thieving it for our own sordid purposes. After the jump, you can check out the latest footage from Marvelous Entertainment’s slice ‘em up.

The game looks incredibly pretty, but I’m concerned about the gameplay. When I tried it out in Tokyo last year, I was a tiny disappointed. It played decently, but a tiny blandly. Hopefully that was because everything was in Japanese and I didn’t know how to do any of the cool stuff. At least it’s gorgeous, and has massive, red, half-naked, bearded demons. That’s important.

First EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis screens are impressive screenshot

Last summer, EA announced that they were working on a brand-new tennis franchise (the working title was “EA Sports Tennis”). The original press release noted that the title would be released on the Wii first, with MotionPlus support, and it wouldn’t come to “next generation consoles” [sic] until after the Wii launch.

We’re only just now getting our first look at the Wii version of EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis — today, EA released eight screenshots and three player renders featuring tennis stars of yesterday and today: Ana Ivaniović, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, and Pete Sampras. The game will be shown off to the press for the first time at an event on Thursday, which, sadly, we won’t be able to attend. (However, IGN put up an exclusive preview last week.)

I really like the look of this game. Obviously, the Wii’s hardware isn’t conducive to ultra-realistic graphics, so it’s good to see developers playing to the console’s strengths (as opposed to merely porting down the HD console versions of their games). If you look at the screenshots for Grand Slam Tennis, you’ll notice that the game has a stylized design without being overly cartoony — player faces have clean lines and textures are easy.

And from what we’ve heard so far, the game will provide a realistic take on tennis (gameplay-wise), so expect something more along the lines of the Wii version of Top Spin 3, instead of a Wii Sports clone. Here’s hoping that Grand Slam Tennis delivers — we’ll have to wait until this summer to find out. Check out the game’s official Web site for more details.
