This generation of gaming consoles has welcomed in video/movie entertainment in full force. Unfortunately, Nintendo’s Wii, despite having the largest install base, does not have much in the way of non-gaming entertainment options. That changes with the introduction of PlayOn, a video streaming application.
The service has already worked fine for users of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but this day Wii joins the celebration this week. Services like Netflix, Amazon, YouTube and Hulu are piped through a Computer into the console by way of a $40 piece of software. New York Times states that a beta service launches tomorrow. There will be a 14-day trial for you to check it out.
If you’d like to sign up for the beta, head here. Let us know how it goes.

Yet another in-game musician has been revealed for Guitar Hero 5, this time the unlikely and random choice of Muse frontman Matt Bellamy.
Nothing against Bellamy; I love Muse and the band’s music, and I think it’s a perfect fit for these band games. (I simply love playing the bassline of “Hysteria” in Rock Band.) But when you compare him to the other “legends” who will appear in the game — guitarist Santana and the yet-announced, but more or less confirmed Kurt Cobain (among others) — he’s not quite up there. He’s also no Taylor Quick or that guy from Maroon 5.

Capcom has announced that the Wii-exclusive Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles will be available in stores on November 17 in North America. This is exactly what’s been listed by retailer GameStop since June, so no surprises here.

If you’re good with them arts, Ubisoft is interested in your particular talent. The publisher is hosting a contest to find a t-shirt design that’ll appear in the upcoming Wii title, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle.
Winners will be chosen personally by Goichi Suda, and the design will appear on the t-shirt of the game’s main character, Travis. Of course, that’s all you win. If you want to see your shirt “in action,” you’ll have to purchase your own copy of the game when it comes out next year. According to the contest’s official rules, the approximate value of the prize in U.S. dollars is zero.

Many people would claim that it was the Wii that truly cracked the mainstream audience and brought gaming to a whole new demographic. However, those are people who inhabit reality, and not the bizarre fantasy realm that Sony executives live in while they lick hallucinogenic toads and quaff vast amounts of LSD. According to Kaz Hirai it’s the PS2, not the Wii, that brought gaming to the general public.

Surely, everyone saw this coming: Nintendo has revelaed that Wii Sports Resort is a ridiculously large success.
The publisher has revealed that since its June 26 launch, over 1 million duplicates of the game have been sold in the United Says. Oh, and in Japan and Europe each, more than 1 million copies of Wii Sports Resort have been sold as well. This shouldn’t be too surprising, as the game ships with the exciting new Wii MotionPlus peripheral that everyone just has to have. Oh, and the words “Wii Sports” are so popular that appending them to pretty much anything would result in a sales explosion (i.e. Wii Sports Colonoscopy is trademark just waiting to happen).
It helps that the collection of games, including Swordplay and archery, are actually pretty damned good. Were you one of the 1 million Wii Sports Resort sales?

The above patent image? HA! Hilarious!
It looks like Nintendo has been cooking up a soft football controller for the Wii, according to a recently filed patent submitted by Howard Chang, VP for R&D. It looks to be something like a NERF football with a groove cut out for the Wii Remote. You wrap your hands around the ball as normal, and your fingers can touch the Wii Remote buttons. Other images in the patent advocate that even the Nunchuck could be stuffed inside. Siliconera explains that the ball would even be able to sense shifting and running. And in true Nintendo fashion, there’s a handstrap to keep things safe.
Look, it’s going to be hard for children to resist the urge to throw this thing. If you’re supposed to mimic the football throw to control it, these kids are only one step away — letting go — from having this ball fly into your television.
What do you think of this thing? Do you see yourself using this kind of controller?

I understand that GameStop means well with all these preorders bonuses, but when it comes to this latest one for the upcoming Wii game A Boy and His Blob, well, it just seems care about it could have been better. If you preorder the game through them, you get this Blob stress ball, which as the right face but somehow looks more like an egg that someone drew a face on with a marker. Besides, why would I want to squeeze Blob? That would hurt him!
If you want to preorder this anyway and squish Blob’s face, you can do so here. The game is coming out in October and we can’t wait to finally get it, as you may have gathered from our visit to WayForward’s studios back around E3 time. The game looks just as awesome as you would imagine, and I exepct it to easily be one of my favorite titles on the Wii this year. Are you planning to pick it up?
