Verizon BlitzThree weeks ago we reported Verizon will be launching the Pantech-made Blitz phone. The moment has come and we’re sure heavy texters among the carrier’s potential and existing customers are rejoicing as we talk. The reason is easy — the Blitz is relatively low-cost phone with full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, allowing users to type SMSes as quickly as humanly possible with their thumbs.

In addition, the Blitz also sports a 1.3 megapixel camera, 2.2″ 220

KPN launches Mobile TV with NSN tech

Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has launched a 10-channel DVB-H service in the Netherlands, for Mobile Operator KPN. More channels are expected in the future, stated KPN.

For right now though, that’s a nice offering - and it syncs up very nicely indeed with the launch of the N96 - arguably one of the few stylish DVB-H devices. As we know, the N96’s good audio, kickstand, and compliance with Nokia’s flavour of DVB-H, make it a great candidate for this deployment.

And I wouldn’t bet against Nokia letting a few more DVB-H devices out of the stable by the end of the year, just to shore things up!

Sony Ericsson soon to launch music and gaming portal

Sony Ericsson is shortly going to launch the “PlayNow Arena” portal for mobile music and gaming in Europe. The service will include 1mn tracks from Sony BMG (not a surprise!), Warner, and EMI. The Nordics (again, not a surprise) will be getting first crack at this, followed by the rest of Europe later in the year - and then globally in 2009.

PlayNow has some stiff competition though in the form of iTunes, and also Nokia’s various interweb offerings. One large weapon in the armoury is that the tracks will be DRM-free (yay!). Bring it on I say, the sooner we can get good choons and games on our SE Mobys, the sooner we’ll be truly free (or something like that….)!

We’ve been looking for Nokia to bring a new wave of N-series devices to the world for a good while now. The Nokia N79 and Nokia N85 were expected to take offer consumers even more of the glossy-finished N-series goodness that we see on the Nokia N96. The Nokia N85 NAM (North American edition) has been spotted at the FCC, so it’s fitting that Nokia finally bring the Nokia N85 and N79 out in to the open.

Nokia N85

Today, missing our expectations by a small margin, Nokia has officially taken the wraps off their new pair of handsets - the Nokia N79 and Nokia N85. As the successor to the Nokia N81, the dual-sliding Nokia N85 offers a newly uprated 5 megapixel camera, fitted with the dual-LED flash and the Carl Zeiss optics that Nokia adores to use on their higher-megapixel cameraphones. Add to that some GPS, 3G (HSDPA), WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, 2.6-inch AMOLED display, and microSDHC card slot, and you’ve got the makings of a serious handset. The Nokia N85 runs on S60 3rd Edition and is fully N-Gage compatible.

The Nokia N79 likewise takes the not-so-old Nokia N78 and bumps things up a notch. The Nokia N79 takes the camera to the land of 5-megapixels, again with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash in tow. With GPS, WiFi, and microSDHC card slot, the Nokia N79 is a true performer, but don’t let that fool you in to thinking the Nokia N79 is all business. The Nokia N79 is being billed as an N-series fashion phone with swappable back covers.

HSBC not dumping BlackBerrys for iPhones

Roughly a week ago we wrote about HSBC apparent plans to dump BlackBerrys in favor of iPhones. Well, that ain’t gonna happen soon as we now have the official word from the HSBC UK representative who said:

I don’t know if he was miss quoted or if it was made up, but I can put the rumours to bed now and state there’s no truth in it at all. It’s simply not going to happen.

As a reminder, the buzz all started when HSBC Australia and New Zealand CIO Brenton Hush was quoted by ZDNET Australia as saying HSBC was considering the switch.

Sure, iPhone might be ready for enterprise usage, but jumping on that swiftly doesn’t seem logical for such a massive bank as HSBC. Guess we’ll have to wait a tiny longer to see corporations going the “Apple route…”

MasterCard, Bell Mobility trial mobile payments

MasterCard and Bell Mobility are in the midst of trialing contactless payments with mobile phones. About 24 million locations such as fast food restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores and convenience stores, which accept MasterCrd PayPass are involved in the pilot program. No signature is required for buys under 50 bucks — all you have to do is place your mobile phone near the payment reader and watch your balance going down.

As for the security, MasterCard argues contactless payments are as safe as traditional card payment transactions. “Contactless payments also provide more consumer control, since the mobile phone doesn’t have to leave your hands to be swiped by a merchant/retailer. All PayPass enabled mobile phones are protected with Zero Liability coverage for any fraudulent transactions.”

MasterCard and Bell’s trial runs until November 2008. More information is available from MasterCard Canada’s website
