Rapidtvnews.com is reporting that the BBC wasn’t overly positive about Apple’s stance to DRM, during a talk about the success of iPlayer recently. Incidentally, the Beeb also rolled out some BIG numbers about iPlayer usage…:

“Huggers supplied some impressive statistics showing how growth had doubled over the past nine months, from a January monthly total downloads of 11.2m to September’s 22.8m (daily growing from 361,000 to 759,000 over the same period)”

The BBC’s iPlayer traffic is coming 85% from Windows-enabled Computers, 10% from Macs, 1% each from Linus and Wii devices, and 3% from iPhone Touch.

IPlayer is also extending the BBC’s prime time well into the late night hours with highest traffic taking place during the 9pm-midnight period. Data also showed that usage was high during office hours. “This represents a fantastic opportunity to hang on to prime time,” stated Huggers. There have been more than 250m streams or downloads generated since launch, with 56m taking place on the BBC service offered to Virgin Media users (who can play the system out on their Television sets).

“We believe that on-demand is completely in addition to the normal linear transmission,” said Huggers. Usage pattern is highest (43%) in the 35-54 age range, 37% in the 15-34 range, and a still impressive 21% in the 55+ group. Huggers said the BBC’s priorities included “absolutely betting on the web.”

Anyway… back to iPlayer, and the iPhone (& iPod Touch) – apparently a team from the Beeb visited Apple and discussed the whole matter of DOWNLOAD and the iPhone – the issue to-date having been of course that Apple won’t licence their Fairplay DRM to anyone, and so without passing the content through iTunes, it’s not possible to protect premium content on the devices. The Beeb are keen to have download for the iPhone/Touch, much as they’ve done with the N96, but Apple ain’t budging on this whole DRM licensing thing!

It’s a shame, because having played with the iPlayer interface on various platforms, the iPhone is right up there with the best of ‘em. So it’s going continue to be streaming only for the moment I’m afraid -(

You've got the who-ooole world - in your hands.

You've got the who-ooole world - in your hands.

The folks at Sony were kind enough to mail me and let me know that I could (and should perhaps?) be doing more with my PSP. Apparently there’s lots extra that the PSP does, including:

Use Go!Explorer – the GPS add-on:

Go!Explore

Go!Explore

Use Go!Cam – the Webcam add-on:

Go!Cam

Go!Cam

In addition to this (but not in the newsletter), there is also the option (for UK users) to use Go!View – the TV download service from Sony & Sky – which is nice.

For more info on Go!Explorer and Go!Cam, go here.

For info on Go!View (UK users), go here.

My Calendar won't take me on a date...

My Calendar won't take me on a date…

Envision your iPhone calendar – Ok, now think of it without any entries! Not much use, is it?

Well that is what happened to me in my ongoing battle to get the iPhone behave – honestly, it’s like having a belligerent child with this device!

So having fixed the calendar sync issue (or sorts, see here), I was happily using the calendar, until … oh dear … the screen is blank when the app is launched, and it crashes (every time) after 10 seconds – WTF !?

Ironically, the calendar entries haven’t been wiped, because the reminders I had previously set up still work, but, no calendar days, listings, or buttons will render when the app is loaded…

Solution: I’ll give you a clue – it starts with “re” and ends in “store”…. DOH!

I am beginning to wonder whether someone has hexed my iPhone with some kind of freaky curse, because I’ve experienced 3 MAJOR (I would argue potentially even critical) issues with the iPhone in less than 2 weeks!

Still, it’s all good fun isn’t it – I mean life would be just DULL if it worked first time…. ;-)

Let us know if you have major iPhone issues in the comments – we’d love to hear from ya!

The Contour Hardskin case on the iPhone 3G

The Contour Hardskin case on the iPhone 3G

Yee-argh. Cases make your iPhone look ugly. I’ve heard some reports recently that they can even scratch your iPhone. That SUCKS. But, if it’s the right case, it can provide much needed protective haven for the uber-device – hence my buy of one.

And to be fair, I’ve got a strange one – it’s a case from a company called Contour and the specific model is the “Contour HardSkin iPhone 3G Case”. Any of you got one?

I state it’s a strange case for a couple of reasons – first of all, it really only protects from abrasion, not impact – because the case splits in two (quite easily) along the edges – meaning if it took a bang the case would boomerang away, spilling it’s contents on to a (probably hard) surface.

It’s also not the cheapest thing ever - £20 is a bit steep methinks, but who has got time to browse the InterWeb for (a) the right case at (b) the right price? Not me these days…

So am I using the case? No. Why? Well…

1) I’ve yet to find a screen protector I like (see here) – a case without a screen protector is like shoes without laces….

2) It’s doesn’t protect from impacts

3) It’s just a little tiny tiny bit ugly

But other than that, the case performs to spec – it has some silly, strange clippable covers for the power and volume buttons, but you’ll bin them immediately if you get this case – I did.

So overall it’s like a 6.5/10 for the case – does anyone have a better suggestion to protect the iPhone 3G? If so, comments please!

(You can check out the case here)

Just when we posted about new firmware being available for the Nokia E66 and E71, another ESeries device got an upgrade, too. It’s the Nokia E51, which with the new software version should be even more faster and reliable to use than ever.

Unfortunately, there’s no change log at the moment, so we don’t know what exactly was changed. However, according to Symbian-Freak, users will see some of the applications loading much faster. They mentioned that Nokia Maps 2 is now loading very fast. On the down side, though, Flash Lite 3 isn’t included in the update, meaning you’ll still need a dedicated app to watch YouTube clips.

As always, we advise to have your firmware up to date. Begin Nokia Software Updater or Nokia PC Suite and take it from there…

Good folks of FCC are always there for us, unveiling which phones are coming in the near future. That being stated, we’ve just spotted the Verizon Wireless-destined Samsung U440 aka Cleo — the same device which we previously saw heading to Bell Canada.

If you’re not familiar, the Cleo is designed to be a modern girl’s best friend, hence the make-up compact design. Once opened, this baby puts the power of quick message typing to its owner, thanks to the full QWERTY keyboard hidden under the flip. Rest of the specs include a 1.3 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth support (A2DP), threaded SMS app, music player and a memory card slot.

At the moment, we’ve no idea when will the Cleo hit Verizon’s offering, but with Christmas steadily approaching I doubt we’ll have to wait too much…

RIM tends to get their devices out to enterprise customers a little early, and that time has arrived for the Verizon BlackBerry Storm. A private sale of the new touchscreen smartphone will be happening November 17th. - 21st. for select invited partners. Our old info was pointing to a public November 16th., release, but this invitation would push that back to at very least the 21st., if not later. Too bad, especially considering Vodafone will be getting the BlackBerry Storm at the end of this week, but one way or the other, everything will be ready in time for the new year. The $219.99 price point has recently come to light, but of course all of that’s subject to change until the official launch.

Ad-supported mobile games distribution network Greystripe has announced a partnership deal with Zapak, India’s largest online gaming company which is a part of the Reliance ADA Group. Under the agreement, Greystripe will provide its catalog of over 900 ad-supported games and apps to Zapak’s 5.1 million registered gamers.

Zapak’s integration with Greystripe signals India’s movement towards alternative forms of distribution for popular mobile content. With everyone from Apple to Google to Microsoft launching their own versions of game and application storefronts for cell phones in the U.S., Greystripe is the only company that’s providing a solution similar to an app store in India. As proven through the popularity of Apple’s App Store in America, mobile games and applications are a critical category for media companies looking to get into the mobile market. Greystripe provides Zapak with the opportunity to offer this valued entertainment for free.

Commenting on the announcement, Zapak’s CEO Rohit Sharma said: “Greystripe is the global leader in ad-supported mobile game distribution and we’ve partnered with them to bring this very special experience to the Indian audience. We chose to work with them because they have proven the value of their rich media mobile ads to brands and they’re cross-platform, which grants us to serve all of our users.”

Finally, to put this deal in perspective, here are some numbers from Gartner: According to the research company, India generated $80 million in total mobile gaming revenue in 2007 and the figure is forecast to reach $450 million by 2012.
